Final Thoughts

Dan and Kate made some progress here. By using Socratic Questioning, we helped Kate realize that there was no evidence to support her negative thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about herself. This exercise healed some of Kate’s hurt and shame, which had only kept her bound emotionally and doubting her partner’s love for her. This was a positive step toward healing this military family.

By the same token, Dan remained stuck in his beliefs that looking at porn online was harmless to their relationship. This is an area that we will need to get into further in the couple’s therapy process. In this situation, Dan did reach a point several sessions later where he realized that he needed more help to deal with his sexual addiction. So we referred him out for additional help from a sex therapist and provided options for a 12-step program. If you encounter this situation with any of your couples, you will need to exercise clinical judgment in deciding whether additional help will be necessary.

As a result of going through this step, our military family was making some gains and healing their intimate bonds. Once the family has reconnected on this deeper level, they will be more ready to move on to the next step: processing. And that is where we head in the next chapter.
